Castle of Leeds

  • Supposedly erected soon after 1066. Now called Mill Hill.
  • Beseiged and taken by King Stephen in 1139, in his march against the Scots (source: Kelly's Directory of Leeds 1927, p. xv).
  • From Tower of London records 1373: "In the Manor of Leeds. A mill, constructed in the water running from the King's dam, without the town, with 9 acres of land, through the middle of which the aforementioned water runs. Granted to Thomas Burgers and his heirs of 33s 4d per annum."
