Electoral registers: who could vote?

  • Before 1832: Large landowners.
  • After 1832: All occupants of houses valued at £10 a year freehold.
  • 1867: Some female householders who campaigned for the right to vote made it onto registers.
  • 1869: Single and widowed rate-paying women were given the right to vote in local elections only.
  • 1918: All men aged 21 and over. All women over 30.
  • 1928: All men and women over 21.
  • 1969: Everyone over 18.
