Electoral registers FAQ

  • Can people photocopy the register? No. If they need written proof of information taken from the resister, they need to contact the Electoral Register Office at the Town Hall for a letter of confirmation (costs £10).
  • How much of the register can people consult? As much as they want, as long as they do it themselves.
  • Do people need ID to look at it? No.
  • Can people make enquiries over the phone? No, they must inspect the register themselves, in person.
  • Can police/debt collectors/officials/crimestoppers etc. look through the register? Yes, it's a public document and anyone can inspect it. (For specific regulations regarding use of the registers for crime-prevention, see Representation of the People Regulations 2001 - Regulation 109.)
  • Can library staff use the register to verify a customer's address? Yes.
  • Where are the specific legal citations regarding public use of the registers? Representation of the People Regulations 2001 - Regulations 7(4), 43, 43(1A), 95(3)(b)(i), 96, 96(2A)(b)(i).
