Barrage balloons

  • Leeds "did not have barrage balloons but in May 1940 one broke adrift on Teesside and drifted through the night... Over north Leeds it dropped, and its length of cable was trailing over roofs, knocking over chimney pots. Hundreds of people were awakened by its eerie screeching. Police & Cleansing dept officials finally grabbed the cable and grappled it to a lamp post in the grounds of St James Hospital. It uprooted the post but other parts of the cable were secured in Roseville Rd. The sagging ballooon was finally brought down by RAF men in Clarence St." - EP 28.02.87 Weekend Post p.4 (no other info given).
