Statues

  • Statue directly opposite the window of L&FH is Patrick James Foley, founder of the Pearl Life Assurance Company, which used to own the building.
  • 3 statues on building to the left represent the Arts. The building is called Athenaeum House (c.1890) and was designed by William Bakewell (see Pevsner's Leeds, p.167).
  • Eastgate fountain: Arthur Louis Aaron (1922-43), bomber pilot. See Gilleghan's A-Z of Local History.
  • Peel Statue/Woodhouse Moor: erected 1852 in Park Row, outside Town Hall (see below). Has stood on Woodhouse Moor since 1937.
  • Town Hall/Victoria Gardens: Statues outside (in Victoria Gardens) were Robert Peel and Queen Victoria, since moved to Woodhouse Moor. See Leodis for photos, including this one, which shows both.
